Our old LaserJet 6MP
I've owned a LaserJet 6MP, a 600dpi, 8ppm indestructable workhorse since I bought the thing for $700 when it was new. This was like 10 years ago or so.
When our print server died, we had a choice: get a parallel print server, or a USB print server and a new printer.
While the new printers are nice (1200dpi, more ppm), none of them look like they would last 10 years and over 16000 pages, cardstock and envelopes, labels and index cards, without skipping a beat. I mean, I've never even cleaned the thing, and it's still going strong. It even supports PostScript natively!
While evaluating printers on the 'net, I read some reviews of the 6MP -- everybody says if you manage to grab one of these things, hang onto it -- don't let it go. So that's what we did.
We got a D-Link DP-300U print server: it'll support up to 2 parallel printers and a USB printer at the same time, and works wonderfully (we ordered it from Tiger Direct, it came in the mail today).
I'm sorry I ever considered getting rid of our old reliable 6MP. I'm considering upgrading it's memory: 72 pin SIMMS, up to 32M of RAM (it's currently got 3 -- I wonder how its performance would change)...
