The Name

Iapetus

(“eye AP i tus”)

Also known as Iapetos. The mountain titan, father of Atlas, son of Uranus. Iapetos is an anscestor of the human race.

“Now Iapetus took to wife the neat-ankled maid Klymene, daughter of Okeanos, and went up with her into one bed. And she bare him a stout-hearted son, Atlas: also she bare very glorious Menoitios and clever Prometheus, full of various wiles, and scatter-brained Epimetheus.” -Theogony 507-511

His name derives from 'ia' (voice) and 'petos' (winged). Winged voice.

Iapetus was Kronos' general in the war of the Titans and was cast into Tartarus by Zeus.

“It was only after the battle with fierce Iapetus [general of the Titanes] and the toils of Phlegra [against the Gigantes] that Olympus’ palace set me [Zeus] over the universe.” -Valerius Flaccus 1.563

Iapetus is also the seventeenth of Saturn's known satellites and the third largest. It also has a mystery. One half of Iapetus is dark in color, and the other half is light. As of the time of this writing, nobody knows the reason for this, although the Cassini sattelite in 2004 may provide some insight.
